Paul Heaton offered profits from his songs to the government – but they said no

Image
The bizarre revelation came when Paul was a guest on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff, however despite offering revenue from his entire back catalogue and any future singles, business secretary Greg Clark turned the offer down. Heaton, who was previously in 80s band The Housemartins and 90s outfit Beautiful South, was on The Wright Stuff to promote his new album, Crooked Calypso. Speaking on the show, Heaton said: ‘I offered my songs up for nationalisation. This would mean songs like Happy Hour, Rotterdam, Perfect 10 and the rest. ‘Every time they get played on the radio, the state would take the money and put it back into improving our living standards.’ The offer would have helped secure a comfortable future for the residents of Heaton’s stomping ground, Hull, had it been accepted. Paul Heaton called it ‘blatantly imprudent’ to refuse his offer (Picture: Getty Images) The singer explained further that he felt he’d ‘made enough money’ from the songs, and was off

Scientists May Have Found The First Moon Outside The Solar System

Space Advertisment By Jonathan O'Callaghan 28/07/2017, 15:02 In what would be a pretty major discovery, astronomers say they may have found the first moon beyond the Solar System – known as an exomoon. The potential discovery is 4,000 light-years away around a star called Kepler-1625. It was made using NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope by three astronomers, Alex Teachey and David Kipping from Columbia University, and a citizen scientist called Allan Schmitt. They published their results in a paper available on arXiv, and submitted to journals for rev

If The Universe Is Expanding, Then Why Aren’t We? (Synopsis)

Image
The fabric of expanding space means that the farther away a galaxy is, the faster it appears to recede from us. Image credit: NASA / GSFC. “In an expanding universe, time is on the side of the outcast. Those who once inhabited the suburbs of human contempt find that without changing their address they eventually live in the metropolis.” -Quentin Crisp The Universe is expanding. The farther away a galaxy is, the faster it appears to be receding from us. The standard story tells us that space itself is expanding, and that’s the cause, but it’s only natural to wonder if perhaps space is static, and everything else within it isn’t shrinking instead? Many laypersons choose to go this route, and question the entire field of cosmology as a result. The various galaxies of the Virgo Supercluster, grouped and clustered together. On the largest scales, the Universe is uniform, but as you look to galaxy or cluster scales, overdense and underdense regions dom

We watched them every single night for seven weeks – that’s a total of 50 days back-to-back – and now the Love Islanders have been banished from our TV screens and are going it alone in the real world. The likes of Olivia Attwood, Chris Hughes, Montana Brown, Dom Lever, Camilla Thurlow and Kem Cetinay – to name a few – no longer have the benefit of ITV2 cameras filming their every move 24/7, thus ensuring they have a permanent position in the gossip columns. Now, the real work begins. It’s the ultimate test – the survival of the fittest – as they battle every other reality star for column inches, endorsement deals and fans. We’ve teamed up with three celebrity brand experts, including Lord Alan Sugar’s publicist of 17 years, to get the low-down on what the islanders now need to do to ensure theystay in the spotlight. And they have warned that their entire future in showbusiness now depends on the decisions they make right now  -as seamlessly as they entered our lives

Theatre review: Fiddler On The Roof

Image
The anticipation of knowing you will soon be seeing a live performance of one of your favourite musicals of all time; watching talented actors and listening to their strong voices belt out those much-loved tunes with the catchy, moving orchestral score… it's almost the best part of an outing to the theatre. Almost. But then the lights dim and the music starts, and fills your ears and head and you're transported to the world you see unravelling before you and you say to yourself, yes, magic does exist. Based on the iconic stories by Sholem Aleichem, and inspired by Marc Chagall's painting, the Green Violinist,  Fiddler On The Roof tells the story of dairyman Tevye, his wife Golde and what life is like for them and their five daughters in their shtetl (Jewish village) Anatevka in Imperial Russia at the start of the 20th century, where they are holding on tight to their traditions while the world around them changes rapidly.   The musical, by composer and

Transfer oil revenue savings to Sovereign Wealth Fund – NEITI

Image
  — 26th July 2017 The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has called for the transfer of all the country’s oil revenue savings into the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA). Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, the Director, Communications of NEITI, made the call in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja. Orji said that the position was made known in NEITI’s paper  titled: “The case for a robust oil savings fund for Nigeria’’, adding that position was informed by the transparency rating of the NSIA by the global Sovereign Wealth Institute.’’ He said that NSIA had been scored nine out of 10 on the Sovereign Wealth Institute’s transparency index, the highest score by any African Sovereign Wealth Fund. He said that the Nigeria Sovereign Wealth Fund was set up in 2011 to build a savings base, develop infrastructure and provide stabilisation in times of economic stress for the country. He said that the fund was structured into

Will they shut down the Internet during Kenyan poll?

By MUTHONI WANYEKI More by this Author Will our access to the Internet be shut down during the post-polling period? If so, will it be a full or partial shutdown, and how? What are the likely costs and trade-offs? We are increasingly agitated about these questions given that we’re not getting clear signals from the Communications Authority about its intentions. At the National Elections Conference, it (sort of) said it wouldn’t. More recently, it (sort of) said it may. There’s no doubt that sensible people are worried about the sentiments flying around social media platforms in this electoral season. Under the guise of political partisanship, outrageously sexist and xenophobic slurs have become the norm. Even though everybody and their dog publicly condemns “hate speech,” there doesn’t seem to be a legal and public consensus on what it actually is. Is it speech that propagates prejudices and stereotypes of people are based on their gender or ethnicity or religion?

Egypt sentences 43 protesters to life in prison

Image
A court in Cairo sentenced 43 protesters to life in prison and nine others to up to 10 years, in relation to violent acts said to have been committed during the overthrow of former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Authorities accused the defendants of rioting, vandalism and attacking security forces in clashes that saw at least 12 killed and around 2,000 wounded. The accused were also collectively fined over 17 million Egyptian pounds ($948,661) for damage to public property. Tuesday's verdict was the result of a retrial after initial verdicts issued in 2015 were given in absentia. The trial also saw the acquittal of 92 suspects. Those handed sentences will reportedly be allowed to appeal their verdicts. Since the overthrow of Egypt's first democratically-elected president Mohammad Morsi in 2013, mass trials have become a common occurrence. This has formed a key feature

How high is air pollution in your city and how does it compare to the most polluted cities in the world?

Image
P ollution is a greater global threat than Ebola and HIV, according to warnings by the World Health Organisation. According to its recent report, one in four deaths among children aged under five are now due to environmental hazards such as air pollution and contaminated water. Previously this year, air pollution levels in London were worse than those in Beijing for a brief period - with the UK capital's pollutants frequently breaking UK limits. Now, the UK Government plans to tackle such dangers by banning diesel and petrol cars by 2040. But how bad is air pollution in other areas of the UK? How does the UK compare to the world? A ccording to the World Health Organisation (WHO), London is just a mid-table city when it comes to the international league table of polluted places. London only ranked 1,389th out of the nearly  3,000 cities and towns around the world monitored in the WHO's database of annual air pollution readings. W HO guidel

Russia warns of ‘painful’ response if Donald Trump backs US sanctions

Image
Moscow: Russia threatened to retaliate against new sanctions passed by the US House of Representatives, saying they made it all but impossible to achieve the Trump administration’s goal of improved relations. The measures push US-Russia ties into uncharted territory and “don’t leave room for the normalization of relations” in the foreseeable future, Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Wednesday, according to the Interfax news service. Hope “is dying” for improved relations because the scale of “the anti-Russian consensus in Congress makes dialogue impossible and for a long time”, Konstantin Kosachyov, chairman of the international affairs committee in Russia’s upper house of parliament, said on Facebook. Russia should prepare a response to the sanctions that’s “painful for the Americans”, he said. The bill passed by a vote of 419-3 on Tuesday strengthens sanctions against Russia less than three weeks after President Donald Trump and his Russian

Chelsea Soccer Star Kenedy Booted from China After Offensive Posts

Image
Here's the blueprint on how to get kicked outta China ... courtesy of Chelsea soccer star Kenedy . Before Kenedy even took the pitch for his team's Asia tour last week, the 21-year-old Brazilian posted 2 videos on social media: The first contained the caption, "Porra china" -- which some have translated to, "F*ck China." The second showed an image of a sleeping Chinese security guard with a caption that translates to, "Wake up China, you idiot." As you can imagine, the Chinese were PISSED -- with one powerful newspaper printing an editorial trashing the guy for "humiliating China" and suggesting he be kicked out of the country. But Chelsea sent him packin' first and then issued a statement saying the player had been "strongly reprimanded and disciplined." Kenedy tried to apologize ... but it was too late. What an idiot.

Deal or no deal? Noel Edmonds raises Lloyds compensation claim to £300m

Image
TV star Noel Edmonds has increased his compensation claim against Lloyds Banking Group to £300m for a fraud carried out by HBOS staff. It emerged last month that the former Deal or No Deal and Noel's House Party host was seeking £50m. But on Tuesday he confirmed the claim - for losses allegedly suffered when his former business Unique Group was destroyed because of the "industrial scale" fraud - had been ramped up. Lloyds, which rescued HBOS at the height of the 2008 financial crisis, has set aside a £100m compensation pot for the fraud victims. Mr Edmonds is now pushing for three times that amount for the "deep distress and public humiliation" he has suffered. The celebrity, who revealed in an interview last month that he tried to kill himself in 2005 as his firm collapsed, claims Unique Group was among firms affected by the historic £245m loans scam by HBOS employees in Reading, w

Robert Preston is set to take a big and foolish risk to raise some emergency cash in Coronation Street when he ends up in a casino – and viewers may recall that the last time his life almost crashed and burned that the catalyst was this toxic establishment.  With the bistro having been targeted by a firebomb and Rich having a cast iron alibi, Robert is at the end of his tether and things get even worse when he is forced to offer Chesney Brown an out of court settlement of £5k – when he doesn’t have the cash to give to him. While Chesney is relieved that he doesn’t have to go to a hearing, Robert now faces the next difficult step of finding a way to raise the money and rejects Michelle Connor’s attempt to help out. (Picture: ITV) Getting desperate, he grabs some cash from the till and heads to the casino, repeatedly placing bets and losing. As he sweats and hands over more cash, determined that it will eventually pay his way, Robert is anxious as the croupier calls

Image
Social media addicts, beware!! So, ICYMI, Kylie Jenner and Rack City rapper Tyga ended their romance about seven months ago, and (as is always the case with the Kardashian clan) there was a lot of mystery surrounding their break up. Who split up with who? Why did it end, and would they get back together? As time began to pass, we accepted we’d never know the answer... at least, not until the next season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians Kylie and Tyga were together for three years But now, an interview with Tyga has managed to answer some of our burning questions. And you’re going to be pretty surprised at one of the reasons the pair split! Speaking to The Breakfast Club radio, the rapper said: "She's younger than me, so she's dealing with perception. For her, growing up how she grew up, image and perception is everything. You got a bunch of people pulling from you, and you're trying to develop as a woman…" He then hinted that he got i

The 34-year-old former glamour model - who shot to fame after appearing on 'Big Brother' in 2006 - had her assets boosted from a 34C to 34E 10 years ago, but she's now planning to go under the knife again because she has terrible back pain and hates how ''droopy'' her bosoms have become over time. Speaking to new! magazine, she said: ''I just hate my boobs. I get really bad lower back pain. When I take my bra off, they're all droopy and they're so heavy. ''I had a boob job about 10 years ago after 'Big Brother'. Naturally I was a 34C, which I think was perfect, and now I'm a 34DD/E, depending on the bra.
